About Me
My family and community background
My name is Monika and I am 17 years old. There are four family members in my home, including my parents and my younger brother, who is 14 years old. Most people in my community depend on traditional agriculture and find it very hard to manage everyday life. Many young people go to Gulf countries due to difficulties getting a job and having enough money to live on in Nepal. Women, children and people with disability stay at home.
When people in my community get sick, they visit local traditional healers and going to a hospital is their last option. They worship different Gods and offer goats, chicken, duck and fruits to their Gods, despite being very poor. Superstition is one of the major problems in our society.
There is a mission hospital near my village named Chaurjahari hospital. I was impressed by how the missionaries treated the people with compassion. Therefore, I made my dream to be a nurse and serve people in my local community.
Why did you choose your area of study and why do you need a scholarship?
I have seen and experienced the reality of the health situation in our community. Therefore, I dreamed to be a nurse, to serve the people, and to raise the awareness of health issues. Education is expensive in our country and my family are unable to bear all the costs of my nurse training. Without your support, my dream could not become reality. Therefore, I am so thankful for my sponsor, HDCS and MMA.
What impact do you hope to have on your community?
I will, as a local girl, provide awareness about the health and hygiene which I am learning through community health practice. I will also serve people through hospital service thereby hoping to make a difference in my community.
