Since the 1930’s when Murgwanza Mission Hospital was first built by Christian missionaries from the United Kingdom and Australia it has provided compassionate, quality, evidence-based healthcare for the remote and vulnerable communities of the Ngara Region of North-west Tanzania.

This 250 bed hospital is classified as a “District Designated Hospital” by the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and is operated by long-term and trusted MMA partner, The Anglican Diocese of Kagera. As a faith-based operator, the Anglican Diocese of Kagera receives some operational funding including staff salaries from the Ministry of Health, but no funds for capital expenditure. Over decades, MMA has supported the human resource capabilities of this hospital through medical, nursing and allied health scholarships.

The need is critical. In 2024, Murgwanza Hospital treated 31,679 outpatients, admitted 16,347 inpatients, performed 3,442 surgeries and delivered 1,649 babies.

Now, MMA is partnering with The Anglican Diocese of Kagera to improve Murgwanza Hospital facilities so it can continue providing accessible, quality healthcare for the Ngara community for the next generation of Tanzanians living in this remote region.

Currently, the Murgwanza Hospital facilities are in extremely poor condition and not fit for purpose. There is asbestos throughout the buildings, mould has infiltrated internal walls, there is only one functioning operating theatre and labouring women are required to climb a flight of stairs to access toilet facilities. Further, the hospital electricity supply is unreliable.

The need is real with 276 women dying per 100 000 childbirths compared to only 2 women per 100 000 live births in Australia.
