Pakistan, with its population of 201 million people (2018), is located in Asia. Pakistan borders India in the east, Afghanistan and Iran in the west and China is situated in the northeast. While surrounded by land on three sides, the Arabian Sea lies in the south.

About 24% of its total population is living below the poverty, but it may be as high as 31% in rural areas. It is ranked 150 on the UN’s Human Development Index out of 189 countries [United Nations Development Program (UNDP), 2020].

Christian Hospital Tank set up a school called the Dr Ulla Schmitz Memorial School in 2011 to provide quality education for children of hospital staff, in order to encourage nursing staff to stay long-term at the hospital as well as to attract new nurses from elsewhere in Pakistan.

Needs

There is a need for good quality textbooks to achieve the best education possible for the children of local health workers at Christian Tank Hospital and the local community. About 50% of local students come from illiterate backgrounds and are the first generation to receive an education. With the extraordinary rate of inflation, the price for good textbooks is rapidly increasing making it prohibitive for many families.

Project

Medical Mission Aid has provided funding for textbooks for students of Dr Ulla Schmitz Memorial School. In the academic year 2019-20, for the first time, the goal of attracting new hospital workers was achieved, with four families – providing eight new staff members, five of whom are nurses – having joined the hospital with one of the main reasons for accepting positions at the hospital being the high standard of the school.

MMA’s generous giving to the school is, therefore, having a direct impact on the hospital which is providing compassionate, high quality obstetrical, surgical, medical and paediatric care to the communities in City of Tank and adjoining regions.
